QuEChERS and Other New Sample Preparation Techniques for Trace Analysis
Dr. Steve Lehotay
USDA Agricultural Research Service
Eastern Regional Research Center (ERRC)
Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania
Abstract:
QuEChERS stands for “quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe,” which describes the sample preparation concept Anastassiades, Lehotay, et al. devised in 2002 for the detection of pesticide residues in foods. The approach relies on the power of MS and MS-MS coupled to GC and LC to quantitatively and qualitatively determine hundreds of analytes at <10 ng/g detection limits in diverse commodities. QuEChERS entails a flexible, streamlined sample preparation process through the use of novel chemistry for efficient extraction and cleanup to minimize sample size, solvent usage, labor, cost, and labware and space needs. You’ll have to come to the presentation to learn about the keys to QuEChERS and see if it lives up to its name (… or you can read about it in the literature). Other applications (and limitations) of QuEChERS concepts will be described, such as its adaptations for acrylamide, veterinary drug residues, clinical analyses, and possibly your applications of interest. Other new sample prep techniques for trace analysis of organic chemicals in food, environmental, and other sample types will also be discussed with respect to their strengths and limitations for real world utility in the routine lab.
About the Speaker:
At the date of this presentation, Steve Lehotay will have worked with the Agricultural Research Service for 16 years almost to the day since completing his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Florida only 2 weeks beforehand. He attained a B.S. degree in Chemistry from the same institution 4½ years before that. For those who don’t want to do the math, he moved out of the Sunshine State during the cold winter of 1992. He worked as a Research Chemist at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland until July of 1999, when he relocated to the ERRC in Wyndmoor, PA. Steve’s research involves the development of novel analytical methods for chemical contaminants in food and environmental samples. To date, he has authored/co-authored 77 scientific papers and 118 presentation abstracts. He is recipient of numerous awards from his agency, AOAC International, and other organizations, including a recent “Excellence in SPE” award from UCT.
