Surface-Confined Ionic Liquids: Novel Multimodel Media for Liquid Chromatography
Dr. Apryll Stalcup
Department of Chemistry
University of Cincinnati
Abstract:
Contemporary chromatographic separation challenges include characterization of complex mixtures of polar organic analytes with a wide range of molecular weights and potential molecular interaction modalities. Recently, multimodal separations have been reported using ionic liquid moieties as stationary phases in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to address these challenges. Linear solvation energy relationships (LSER) are used to characterize imidazolium-based surface-confined ionic liquid-based stationary phases. In this work, the impact of various substituents on surface-confined imidazolium ligands on the separation is investigated.
About the Speaker:
Professor Apryll Stalcup received her BS in chemistry from California State University-Sacramento in 1979. She worked as an analytical chemist at a small environmental consulting firm outside Washington, DC, before pursuing graduate studies at Georgetown University with Professor Daniel Martire. She obtained her MS in 1985 and her PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1988. While a graduate student at Georgetown University, she was a Graduate Student Co-op Fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland where she worked with Lane Sander and Stephen Wise. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Missouri-Rolla with Professor Daniel Armstrong for two years prior to accepting an Assistant Professor position at the University of Hawaii-Manoa in 1990. In 1996, she moved to the University of Cincinnati where she was promoted to Full Professor in 2001. Current research involves exploring new separation methods and understanding the mechanisms of chromatographic and electrophoretic separations. Her work has resulted in over 80 publications and numerous invited presentations. She is on the Advisory Board of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, the Greater Cincinnati Water Quality Advisory Board and recently represented the Separations Community at a NIH/NSF Instrumentation Development: Tools for the New Millenium Workshop
