About This Meeting

Abstract:
Bile salts are widely appreciated for their diverse roles in maintaining homeostasis, but their stepwise aggregation and unique micellar structures have also led to an expanding realm of useful and tunable properties, from chiral recognition to self-assembly and interactions with materials such as carbon nanotubes. This presentation will describe our work with chiral micellar electrokinetic chromatographic (MEKC) separations in which bile salt micelles are the chiral selectors. We take a multi-disciplinary approach to examining how bile salt systems perform chiral recognition, using MEKC data together with NMR spectroscopy isothermal titration calorimetry and molecular dynamics to characterize structural and thermodynamic properties of bile micelle formation as well as guest-host interactions between micelles and chiral analytes. The data show clearly discrete steps in bile salt aggregation and reveal the availability of chirally- selective and chirally-silent surface binding sites, informing efforts to improve chiral separations with bile salt pseudo-stationary phases.

A Zoom Teleconference Presentation
Please Note: The CFDV continues to observe health and safety restrictions for all members and other parties interested in the separation sciences during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are
also committed to promotion and development in all aspects of separation sciences by sharing our professional experiences with the community. To fulfill these commitments, we will conduct this presentation by video teleconference. Our selected platform for this event will be Zoom.
