About
Emory Payne

Emory Payne is a Senior Scientist in Vaccine Analytical Research & Development at Merck & Co.

Emory began his research journey at the University of Massachusetts Medical School as a high school student, interning to learn about toxicology and developmental biology. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Middlebury College in Vermont, where his research focused on development and characterization of organically modified clay minerals for water remediation. He then moved to the University of Michigan to pursue a PhD in Chemistry, with a focus on analytical chemistry. His graduate research with Professor Robert Kennedy was on the development of analytical methods for high-throughput experimentation using droplet microfluidics. His dissertation afforded him experience in method development using HPLC, direct ESI-MS, and MALDI-MSI.

Emory has led several collaborations with both academic and industrial research groups resulting in multiple publications. His graduate work was supported through a Merck-partnered NSF program, as well as an NIH training program. He has volutenteered as a reviewer, editor, and managing editor at the Journal of Emerging Investigators, which is a journal focused on providing peer review and publication experience for high school students all over the world.

Emory is broadly interested in analytical chemistry, particularly applications of separation science and chromatography and high throughput screening. Outside of work he is an avid squash player, and plays in the Philadelphia area squash leagues.
